Minneapolis, MN - March 5th
1999 - Brainscan Development Corporation, a
Minnesota based company, has signed with Harmless
Games, a California based company, for the right
to publish the upcoming internet-only game
Infantry. Harmless Games was founded in early
1998 by the core creators of the game
Subspace™ (Virgin Interactive
Entertainment) and have been working on Infantry
since.
Infantry allows players to fight in massive
battles across a futuristic landscape. Players
will be able to develop their character's skills
over time with the deep role-playing elements in
the game. Infantry will feature a persistent
world over which players can fly skimmers, drive
multi-man vehicles, and do battle 24 hours a day.
"Online entertainment is clearly one of the
biggest growth markets in the world," says
Nick Fisher CEO of Brainscan, "with online
games being poised to grow quickly over the next
few years. There are only a handful of
development teams out there with the experience
to create a game like Infantry which can handle
hundreds of players in the same game at once;
Harmless Games is clearly one of the best out
there."
Hosted at locations with high speed/quality
connections, Infantry will supply players from
all over the world with a very rich and
constantly evolving game universe.
"We are pleased to partner up with a company
with such strong roots in the gaming
community." says Rod Humble CEO of Harmless
Games. "Brainscan is staffed with many
players of our previous product; they have a
clear and strong vision of what players want and
how it is to be supported."
Infantry will be a subscription-based service
following the lead of such successes as Ultima
Online™ (Origin Systems). The Infantry
software will be available for download free
across the Internet and through other channels.
"Online games are great value for
players," Nick Fisher continues, "for
about $10 you can try out a game for a month and
see if you like it; compare that to the $50 most
retail games cost nowadays. The ongoing
subscription also means that instead of waiting
another year for the sequel, you get the product
constantly updated and cared for on a daily
basis."
Infantry will also feature advanced customization
and player driven community events. "While
developing Subspace™, we learned that
fostering community is as important to the
enjoyment of the players as the game
itself," says Jeff Petersen CTO of Harmless
Games, "You have to continually develop and
support an online game for it to grow and
prosper. Brainscan and Harmless Games both have a
similar vision of what an online game should be
about; as such, this partnership is a big win for
everybody including the players. Infantry will be
made and marketed the way an online game should
be."
The product is slated for a limited beta test
later this year with full release coming sometime
this summer. Further information on the game and
